Terry Copp – The War of 1812: Harper and the Battle for Memory – 2011

Print pagePDF page

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Heritage Minister James Moore are promoting plans to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812 as an “expression of a clear full Canadian identity.” Terry Copp, who is currently teaching a War and Memory course on the War of 1812,  will discuss the problems involved in constructing a public memory of the war.  Copp gets to the heart of Canadians’ popular conceptions of the war of 1812 and reveals how little we actually remember about the last war between Canada and the United States.
