We also take our collective educational experience overseas, teaching Canada’s military past to participants engaged in hands-on learning and exploration. Laurier Military History Speaker Series
The Laurier Military History Speaker Series is conducted as part of the LCMSDS’ mandate to make the latest scholarship in Canadian military history available in an accessible format to Canadians, and has been running for over two decades. The Series runs each Fall and Winter, featuring a total of six historians throughout the calendar year. For more information, please click here.
In conjunction with Wilifrid Laurier University, each May LCMSDS hosts the annual Military History Colloquium. Internationally renowned as Canada’s longest running and most prolific conference for the study of Canadian Military History, the Colloquium brings together the brightest scholars from around North America and the globe. The call for papers is released annually in January.
LCMSDS also proudly supports a variety of military and/or strategic studies conferences in Canada, so please check our site regularly for conference-related information and updates on our events as well as those of our partners.
War & Memory Battlefield Study Tours
LCMSDS is renown for its battlefield study tour programs. These tours have brought hundreds of students and teachers to Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Germany to visit Canadian and international cemeteries, memorials, museums and battlefields. Years of generous support from our donors has made these tours possible, and most importantly for students, affordable.
In 2012, LCMSDS ran the ‘Cleghorn High School History Teachers Study Tour’ in partnership with the Gregg Centre at the University of New Brunswick. The tour provided bursaries to participants whom also had the opportunity to use the tour to obtain a B.Ed or M.Ed credit from UNB.
In 2013 LCMSDS partnered with Wilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Arts to offer a study tour for a course credit. Eighteen undergraduate students and four graduate students toured select Canadian battlefields and cemeteries in an effort to gain a better understanding of the Canadian participation in the first and second world wars.
